Sponsorship Programs

The Adopt-A-Student Program began in 2011, so that donors and friends of Verbum Dei could feel a stronger connection to the school. The Adopt-A-Teacher Program was created in 2014, and by participating donors get to know the teachers and how they teach. Access to a high-quality education is crucial to the personal and long-term development of children, families and communities. Through our Adopt-A-Student / Adopt-A-Teacher Programs, you can help us help these fine young gentlemen achieve their dreams of graduating high school, graduating college, and, becoming fine productive citizens in our society.

Verbum Dei High School is a Catholic, Jesuit, college and career preparatory complemented by our corporate internship program, serving young men of Watts and the surrounding communities who are economically and academically underserved. We develop self-confident gentlemen who are intellectually motivated, spiritually rooted, contemplative, and courageous in their pursuit of a more humane and just world.

Since 1962, Verbum Dei High School has helped underserved, primarily first-generation college bound African American and Latino youth achieve their full potential by providing an intensive college preparatory curriculum. Founded on strong principles of ethics, service and intellectual rigor, Verbum Dei prepares teenaged boys to become self-confident men, instilling in them the skills needed to succeed in college, career and in life.

Although operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Verbum Dei welcomes young men without regard to creed. The school is a member of the Cristo Rey Network, which is dedicated to transforming urban America one student at a time by serving economically disadvantaged students of all faiths and cultures. Verbum Dei integrates classroom learning, corporate internships and extracurricular activities into a cohesive educational experience for the fullest possible benefit to students.

Since 2000, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) has partnered with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to provide strong leadership; recruit and retain highly qualified faculty, administrators and staff; maintain high academic standards; foster an energized and spirited culture of achievement; and broaden and increase the base of financial support through private donations and corporate sponsors.

Verbum Dei has implemented Cristo Rey’s award-winning Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). All students work five days per month in four-person teams for local firms in law, accounting, financial services, health care, nonprofit and other professional sectors. In addition to providing our students with invaluable entry-level experience, CWSP also serves as the school’s primary means of support, as the money earned by students directly goes toward helping fund their education. The CWSP staff also provides students with employment readiness training and coaching, mentoring, field trips and inspirational speakers.

Although many entering freshmen test below grade level in reading and math, 100% of our graduating seniors have gained acceptance into colleges for the past seven years. Verbum Dei offers a diverse array of programs, purposed with the holistic provision of solutions to the various needs of students, faculty and corporate sponsors. Overall, Verbum Dei seeks to work against the factors behind the low academic and social achievement of the area’s African American and Latino young men by offering a rigorous and demanding curriculum that meets the entrance requirements of the University of California and California State University systems, as well as that of most colleges and universities in the United States.

In addition to the Corporate Work Study Program, the college preparatory curriculum is complemented by after-school tutoring, student success teams, a Math and Science Enrichment initiative (including an extra semester of math for all freshmen), mandatory four-week summer academic and employment readiness for all incoming students, summer school for remediating classes, college guidance instruction, counseling services, spiritual development and retreats, campus ministry and community service, community activism, athletic programs, student clubs (e.g., choir and other healthy social experiences) and homework detention when needed.

Adopt-A-Teacher Program

adoptteach1It costs Verbum Dei on average about $100,000 per teacher annually—which includes salary, materials, and overhead. Tuition is only $2,700, yet families pay on average about $1,100. Our work study program generates $7,000 per student per year that goes directly to their education. Some students receive support from the Catholic Education Foundation, but not all students. So, that leaves a funding gap of between $4,000 and up to as much as $5,900 cost per student or written another way, that’s about a $70K funding gap per teacher (See “average scholarship funding” below). And with 22 teachers, the gap can be quite large every year.

Access to a high-quality education is crucial to the personal and long-term development of children, families and communities. Through our Adopt-A-Teacher Program, you can help us help these fine young gentlemen achieve their dreams of graduating high school, graduating college, and, becoming fine productive citizens in our society by sponsoring a teacher—the people who make it all possible!

adoptteach2Participating in the Adopt-A-Teacher Program simply means being financially supportive of Verbum Dei’s funding gap—at least $10K for one teacher. By participating, you are sponsoring a teacher that you will get to know and get to know how they teach. Your teacher can be selected based on your favorite subject, etc. You can interact with your sponsored teacher through acknowledgement letters, classroom reports, meeting(s), scheduled classroom visits, phone calls, etc.
