On June 9th, the class of 2016 marched across the sanctuary at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles as the 51st Commencement Class of Verbum Dei High School
to the excitement of donors, corporate partners, staff, faculty, volunteers, etc.
The entire Verbum Dei community is very proud of its graduates and we know their new paths will bring excitement and joy to many lives. We are proud to say that for the 9th year in a row we had a 100% college-acceptance rate for our graduating seniors, with 91% accepted to 4-year colleges! Among our graduates we had a Gates Millennium Scholar and a Posse Scholar.
Here at the Verb, encourage you to be proud as well, as without your support, and other donors like you, their achievements would not been possible. We know it would be so much more difficult producing “men with and for others” without your generous donations, letters of support, words of kindness, time, energy, and concern. And, we are grateful to those donors who make senior year a little more special for our boys.
Long-time supporters Barbara and John Heffernan have created two scholarships to help our seniors. The Leadership Award in memory of Bernice Heffernan and Wilma Burnett is given to a senior student who has exemplified leadership skills throughout their senior year by serving as ASB President. The Service Award in memory of Bernice Heffernan and Wilma Burnett given to a senior student who has exemplified leadership skills throughout their senior year by providing service beyond their required hours.
Salutatorian Tylan Smith, one of the two students who received The Service Award, had this to say “I am so honored that Mr. and Mrs. Heffernan recognized me for my service in the community. They are so caring and have made my journey to college that much easier. You can tell they really care and want to see us Verb gentlemen succeed in college and beyond. They are truly a great example of what I want to be in the future. I want to help others and will continue my service to the community—I want to give back to Verbum Dei.”
From the board of directors, staff and faculty, parents, students, volunteers, and the entire Verb community, we thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you do for our Verb gentlemen. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And, I wish you a great summer!!
